Residency Training

The American Board for Certification (ABC) in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics requires that Master's degree graduates complete a residency program at an ABC-accredited facility before they can apply for certification.

After Your Master's Degree

All graduates of National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) -accredited master’s programs are required to complete an NCOPE-accredited residency before they are eligible to sit for ABC certification in orthotics and/or prosthetics.

We support students in exploring opportunities nationwide and securing a residency that aligns with their professional goals. Our graduates consistently obtain satisfying residency placements, often prior to graduation.

Residents earn an annual salary of approximately $42,000, with compensation provided throughout the duration of the program.

UT Southwestern's Program

UT Southwestern operates a 24 month, NCOPE-accredited dual residency in orthotics and prosthetics. The diverse nature of our practice offers residents a wide variety of experiences under the supervision of faculty that practice in the clinic and teach in the academic program. All aspects of the clinical and technical residency education are covered including research and presentations.

The program is conducted within the School of Health Professions and includes ongoing collaboration with orthopedic physicians and residents, as well as specialists in rehabilitation medicine, vascular and plastic surgery, neurology, physical and occupational therapy, and many other rleated fields. Residents work alongside experienced clinicians in a fast-paced clinical environment that includes both inpatient and outpatient care across a wide range of patient diagnoses and medical centers including William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Children's Medical Center, and Scottish Rite for Children.

Residency positions are competitive and vary annually based on clinic capacity and staffing needs.
